  113.    The recent one was visible from our observatory in WTX, where
  114.    the sky is usually very dark.   The only way I saw it was via
  115.    the spectral lines that showed up on some data I was taking for

  143. I have to disagree.  The field is ripe.  Speaker-dependent recognition,
  144. especially under low noise conditions, is no longer hard to implement.
  145. My needs are not extreme.  The vocabulary does not need to be extensive
  146. at first.  Also, it would be easy to make the vocabulary context

  215. I am wondering if the Radio Shack HTX-202 is a good starter unit? All of the
  216. ones I have seen in the swap group have been sold, so it looks like I am
  217. going to buy one brand new. Just want to see if this is what I want before
  218. the end of the month so I can get it on sale. Is there any other 2m
  219. hand-held units out there for about the same price? In the mags I have got
  220. thay dont have prices, and by the time I get home to use a phone everything
  221. is closed. :(  If I do go with this unit what else should I get? I am
  222. looking at a MFJ 300watt 5/8 wave groung plane 2m base antenna (MFJ-1750) to
  223. use when at home, and mabey a MFJ-1728 5/8Wave 2m mobile antenna for the
  224. auto...And use the ducky that comes with it for handheld usage... Does this
  225. sound like something that will work for me for a few years? And what about
  226. cable? The mobile comes with 12 feet, I will need about 50feet to get from
  227. my room to the top of the antenna tower. Also talking about antenna tower, I
  228. have a old TV antenna that we dont use so I want to cut the top off, and use
  229. that as my mounting tower. Does anyone see a problem with that? (Becides
  230. trying to get up that high :) Is there anything I missed? I am very new the
  231. the ham radio scene, and want to get something that will work for a bit..
  232. But dont have alot of money :) Any help will be GREAT!

  245. I heard a story from a ham - who heard it from another...

  247. 2 men in park rock climbing - remote area of state ( unknown which state )
  248. 1 fell and was badly injured, other had 2m ht in his backpack.  Due to
  249. location on side of rock face he was unable to access any 2m repeaters, or
  250. raise anybody on simplex.  His radio was wide band & modified so he 
  251. identified himself & asked for help on local sherriff frequency, they
  252. responded.

  254. After injured man was rescued, the sherriff asked the ham to come down to the
  255. station to help them fill out the accident reports & to bring his ht, they
  256. wanted to see how it works.  Well, when he got there, they confiscated his ht
  257. and charged him with several criminal offenses and fined him heavily.

  260. Now according to my understanding, in a matter of life or property anybody is
  261. permitted to transmit on any frequency in any mode necessary to communicate
  262. with emergency personel.  This is an FCC issued federal law.

  350. I'm just now shopping for a 2m/440 HT and am trying to make the same
  351. decision.  The local HRO has the Kenwood TH-78A for $389 and the Yaesu
  352. FT-530 for $399, so price doesn't seem to be a factor.

  354. I'm totally new to radio (no license yet), so I'm not sure how much to
  355. value the different features, but I have plenty of time to learn/shop.
  356.  
  357. They can both be modified to open up the Rx and Tx ranges, but it
  358. sounds like there are many weak areas as you get away from the ham
  359. bands.
  360.  
  361. After mods, the Kenwood does these:
  362.   Rx:  50-180 300-400 400-512 800-950
  363.   Tx: 136-180         400-512
  364.  
  365. The Yaesu does these:
  366.   Rx: 110-180 300-500 800-859
  367.   Tx: 130-180 400-470

  369. At first, I liked the idea of getting FM Broadcast Radio (88-108) on
  370. the Kenwood, but now I read that it's modulated differently
  371. (wide-band?) and doesn't come in anyway, so that's out.
  372.  
  373. The Kenwood has a six-character alphanumeric display & memory, while
  374. the Yaesu does not.  Apparently, you can get an optional microphone
  375. for the Yaesu that does have an alpha display, but I haven't seen it,
  376. and I'm sure it's pricey.
  377.  
  378. The Yaesu has "CTCSS" included while it's an extra option on the
  379. Kenwood.  I have no idea what that feature does, but radios that have
  380. it seem to boast about it.  The Yaesu also has some kind of Automatic
  381. Tone Search feature that I don't yet understand.
  382.  
  383. Both radios can do VHF/VHF and UHF/UHF, but some people say that this
  384. adds interference.
  385.  
  386. The Yaesu has 82 memories, the Kenwood 50 (expandable to 250?).  The
  387. Yaesu has a light-up keypad, and I don't think the Kenwood does.  The
  388. Kenwood does, however, have some internal video games :-).
  389.  
  390. I've only been shopping for a few days, and I'm beginning to wonder
  391. why I don't see much of the Kenwood TH-78A mentioned in comparisons.
  392. The general list of recommended models seems to be: ICOM W21AT,
  393. Standard C558, Yaesu FT-530, Alinco DJ-580T with no mention of the
  394. Kenwood.  Hmmm... Is there some glaring problem with this unit that
  395. takes it right out of the running from the start?
  396.  
  397. I'm anxious to hear what other net.folks have to say about these two
  398. models.
